You wake up late, look at your phone, and the alarm history says it went off right on time. It did. It just played into an earbud sitting in a case on the nightstand, at a volume no one could hear.
When AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, your phone treats them as the active sound output. The alarm follows the sound. If the earbuds are out of your ear and across the room, the alarm rings where you are not.
Why it happens more than you would think
AirPods reconnect on their own. You take them out at night, but the case stays near the phone, and the moment they are in range they pair again. By morning your phone is quietly routing audio to a closed case.
A Bluetooth speaker never disconnected. A bedside speaker you used in the evening can hold the connection all night. The alarm plays through the speaker at whatever volume you left it, which is often too low to wake you.
The phone remembers the last output. Once audio has moved to a Bluetooth device, the phone tends to keep sending it there until you actively switch back.
How to stop it tonight
The reliable fix is to make sure the sound has nowhere to go except the phone speaker.
- Disconnect or turn off your AirPods and any Bluetooth speaker before bed, not just take the earbuds out.
- In Control Center, check the audio output and confirm it is set to iPhone speaker, not a Bluetooth device.
- If you use earbuds right up until sleep, put them fully in the case and confirm the case is not sitting next to the phone where it can pair again.
While you are checking, the ringer volume matters here too. Even on the phone speaker, an alarm set below a level you can hear will not wake you. In Settings, under Sounds and Haptics, push the Ringtone and Alerts slider up.
The part you cannot see
None of this shows the night before. The alarm is on. The AirPods are connected in the background. You find out at 9:03 that the sound went into a case.
